Dear Quilly Girls,

College can feel isolating. But, there’s a line between being alone and being lonely. If there’s anything that this year has taught me, it’s finding joy in alone time. Being crammed in a tiny dorm room, it can be hard to come by. You might feel like you’re the only one sitting alone on the glade on a sunny day. Or that everyone in the dining hall is with a mob of friends, except you. But I promise, you’re definitely not the only one. I personally always feel better doing something fun by myself than rotting in my room. People aren’t out to get you, they probably don’t even notice that you’re alone. Don’t overthink! I’m sure you’re judging yourself more than anyone else is. How can we expect others to enjoy our company if we don’t even enjoy our own? It’s a rough reality, but feeling bad about not having plans won’t ever bring you joy. However, taking yourself out on dates absolutely can and will. You’re hot! You’re fun! Why wouldn’t you want to hang out with you?

My personal favorite solo ideas:

• Go on a long walk. Make a playlist of your current favorite songs, and walk until you’ve listened to the whole thing.

• Grab a coffee. (Nobody’s going to judge you for being at a coffee shop alone, I promise).

• Read on the glade.

• Stay in and have a movie night.

• Get work done. (If you have time to wallow, you probably have time to actually do your readings for class).

• Teach yourself a new skill, like crochet or maybe how to play an instrument. (There’s literally never harm in trying. Who cares if you don’t know what you’re doing?).

• Paint or draw.

• Cook/bake a new recipe.

• Make a Pinterest board (I personally believe that Pinterest doesn’t count as scrolling on social media…)

• Start a journal.

• Go thrifting (Thrifting is honestly so much better alone. You don’t have to race your friends for the best pieces).

• Take a nap.
