Dear Quilly Girl,
With Spring Break right around the corner, you might be noticing a phenomenon: everybody’s going to the exact same place. College students tend to frequent the same, time-honored destinations again and again, from Nassau to Fort Lauderdale. In fact, things got so bad that last year, Miami actually had to put out a campaign discouraging spring breakers’ behavior!
But Quilly girls do things a bit differently. We’re not here to follow the crowd. We’re here to live our fullest lives and travel with our besties in a meaningful way! Here’s a breakdown of alternative trips to take, broken down by house. Just look for the keywords that describe the personalities of you and your besties, and get to planning!
Kahlo House (creative, expressive, resilient)
True to their name, Kahlo girls are artists at heart. Even if you couldn’t draw a person to save your life, your creativity and self-expression shines through in everything you do, whether it’s your taste in music, your unique sense of style, or the über-niche movie recommendation that has your friends wondering how you have such good taste. What better vacation spot than one well-known for its art scene? That’s right, I’m talking about Santa Fe, New Mexico! Great spots to visit include the famed Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture. Don’t forget to visit Canyon Road, which boasts dozens of art galleries!
Lovelace House (logical, detail-oriented, innovative)
Lovelace girls love nothing more than sitting down and figuring out a difficult problem, and they understand that there is no deeper satisfaction than that of discovery and innovation. What better spring break vacation spot than the Bay Area, CA? Visit the Computer History Museum in Mountain View to learn all about the pioneers of modern-day tech (including Ada Lovelace herself!) and the Exploratorium in San Francisco to just nerd out and have fun. And don’t forget the delicious eats all around the city!
King House (driven, energetic, active)
So you’re a King Girl. You’re always on the go. Whether or not you play a sport, you’re always buzzing with energy and moving around. Your perfect spring break centers around nature, hikes, and tons of adventurous, outdoorsy activities. Your perfect vacation spot is Maui, Hawaii. You can hike at Haleakalā National Park or snorkel at Ka’anapali Beach. However, in the wake of the 2023 fires that devastated historic Lahaina, it is important to practice mindful tourism and support local businesses.
Angelou House (articulate, reflective, compassionate)
If you’re an Angelou girl, you’ve probably been told at some point in your life that you have a way with words. Whether that meant expressing yourself through creative writing or talking about the things that matter most at Speech and Debate, you’ve always found a way to turn ordinary language into something beautiful. For spring break, you should tap into your inner author and do a literary tour of the East Coast, from the Emily Dickinson Museum in Massachusetts to the homes of many other esteemed authors, like Louisa May Alcott and Mark Twain! Of course, the trip wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the National Portrait Gallery to pay tribute to Dr. Maya Angelou herself.
Lamarr House (inventive, curious, resourceful)
As a Lamarr Girl, you don’t see things the same way as others. You think outside the box. You’re that friend who always has a crazy new idea. So when everyone’s catching flights for spring break, why not flip things around and have the staycation of your life? That’s right—I’m talking sleepovers at a different house every day, movie nights, picnics, arts and crafts sessions, and so much more! With a staycation, each one of your friends can take things at her own pace, and you’ll be saving so much money while making memories that last a lifetime.
Hopefully, you’ve been convinced by now that there’s no one way to do spring break. Each friendship is different and unique, and you deserve a vacation curated just for you. Have an amazing break!
Xoxo,
A Quilly Girl
